Camel Crickets
What are they?
A group of somewhat sinister-looking crickets that are largely nocturnal in behavior and usually inhabit dark places. Their English name comes from the hump-backed appearance.
Identification
The hump-backed look to these insects makes them immediately recognizeable, but telling the various species apart is extremely difficult. It has only relatively recently been realized that one introduced species makes up the vast majority of reports of camel crickets throughout most of the USA.
Greenhouse Camel Cricket Diestrammena asynamora
Probably originated from Eastern China but now widespread throughout tropical and warm-temperate regions. A common species in built up areas, favoring damp basements and similar places and capable of building up very large populations.
