Flat-backed Tortrix Moths
What are they?
The Tortricidae (Tortrix Moths) is a large family of moths, which is here broken into two sections - those that tent-fold their wings and those that fold the wings flat over the back. This is an artificial division but one based on a simple identification point which therefore helps to narrow the search down. These flat-winged species usually have an outline of rather broad, rounded shoulders and parallel-sided wings, with a squared-off rear end.
Identification
This is a large family of often very similar species, though the flat-backed forms are generally fewer in number and a easier to identify than the tent-folded species. The presence and exact location of lines across the wings and the precise angle relative to the edge of the wing can be important.
