Cutworms and Darts

What are they?

The Cutworms and Darts form the tribe Noctuini within the subfamily Noctuinae of the Owlets. This is a fairly large group of moths with larvae that are mostly hairless and often feed at the bases of plants where they are often dug up in the garden.

Identification

Often common and plentiful moths which come readily to light. Wings are generally folded flat on the back and most are drab browns or gray-browns. A variable group and mostly readily identifiable, but some of the darts are problematic and it is possible that some 'species' as currently recognized may involve more than one species.
