Hooded Owlets & Sharks
What are they?
Moths in this group are usually largely gray in color and often with longitudinal dark lines running the length of the forewing. The moths are named hooded owlets for the hooded appearance that is created by the tuft of hairs on the back of the thorax. For the same reason they are also often called sharks. Caterpillars are often brightly colored and sometimes named 'paints'.
Identification
Many of the moths in this group are rather similar and it can often be necessary to get details of hindwing color to confirm identification.
