Arches, Wainscots and allies

Rust-spotted Green Arches Bristly Cutworm Adjutant Wainscot White-speck

What are they?

This group brings together three tribes in the Noctuinae subfamily of the Owlets: Hadenini, Leucaniini and Eriopygini. Many of these moths are widespread generalists, whose larvae feed on a range of low, herbaceous plants, often at or close to the ground.

Identification

A large group of moths, the darts (Hadenini are very variable both in general color and markings, making them mostly easy to identify. Wainscots (Leucaniini) can be more problematic as they are mostly rather plain and poorly marked and it is sometimes necessary to use feature of the hindwing for identification.
