Fishflies

Summer Fishfly

What are they?

Often quite large and imposing-looking insects, most often seen when they are attracted to light at night. Larvae are aquatic and are voracious predators of other invertebrates.

Identification

A group of generally rather similar-looking insects. The structure of the antennae and details of the wing and body markings can be important for identifying the various species.

Summer Fishfly     Chauliodes pectinicornis

Locally, this is the most common species in this group and is most readily seen when individuals (especially males) are attracted to light and can be quite startling if they suddenly thump against an insect screen.
