Spiderflowers
What are they?
A small group of slender plants, some of which are grown as summer bedding plants. Plants in this group are identifiable by the elongated cluster of stamens which give rise to the name 'spiderflower' for members of the family.
Where are they found?
Members of this group are introduced so tend to appear irregularly in disturbed ground, roadsides and similar areas.
Identification
Plants can be identified by details of leaf shape and the size and color of the flower petals.
Pink Spiderflower Tarenaya hassleriana
Occasionally grown as summer bedding and may be found as a garden throw-out. Flowers June to October. Note flowers may be white (see page header above) or various shades of pink.

Red-whiskered Clammyweed Polanisia dodecandra
A plant of dry, gravelly areas which is native in eastern North America but perhaps just a garden escape or introduction in our area. Flowers July to September.
