What are they?

The Ebony family includes many species of tropical trees, some being well-known as producers of choice hardwoods. Just one or two species are found further north in cooler climes, with the Common Persimmon being our only native species in New Jersey.



Common Persimmon      Diospyros virginiana

Not uncommon in areas of secondary growth such as old fields and abandoned and waste ground. This species is particularly common south of the canal in Cape May, where it may have been planted as a crop plant in the past. Flowers May to June.
