What are they?

Picture-winged Flies are very interesting flies to study. Males perform courtships to the females by waving their decorative wings at right angles to the body. These colorful flies are widespread and common and may be found throughout the summer.

Identification

Many of the commoner species of this group can be identified relatively easily. Take careful note of body color and details of the wing markings.

A chestnut and black species. Wings are mostly black with a distinctive pattern of clear 'windows'.
