Long-legged Flies
What are they?
This is a rather variable group of small flies with noticeably long and slender legs. Some species are drab brownish or black but others are brilliant metallic green or blue. They are most often seen perched on the surface of leaves in wooded areas during the summer, from where they actively hunt smaller insects such as aphids and the smaller gnat and mosquito species.
Identification
The identification to species of most species is very difficult and often impossible in the field, often requiring dissection.
Condylostylus sp.
A woodland species that can be very common within the shrub layer of wooded areas, especially along the edges of trails and clearings.
