What are they?

Also known as moth or owl flies because of their furry wings, these small and dark flies are widespread and common in certain damp habitats. They are most likely to be seen sitting on the bathroom or kitchen wall, or lurking around the wash basin. The larvae of these species feed on the 'gunge' that can build up in drainage pipes and the adults can build up into very large populations in sewage plants and similar places. Adults have a remarkable ability to avoid being washed down the plug hole!

Identification

Filter flies are all rather dark flies and can be identified by studying details of the antennae and by checking the number and distribution of pale or dark spots on the wings.
