Dark-winged Fungus Gnats

Odontosciara nigra

What are they?

Fungus gnats or sciarid flies are extremely common but very small, dark flies. The adults only live a few days and the small, white larvae feed on decaying plant material. Adults can commonly be found hanging around over-watered house plants, where the larvae feed on decaying plant material in the compost.

Identification

Most species are tiny, all black and extremely similar. Females cannot be identified to species - and some cannot be safely identified even to genus with out dissection.



     Odontosciara nigra

A common species which, due to the reddish color of the abdomen, could be mistaken for a March fly. However, fungus gnats are much smaller than March flies.
