Burrowing Bugs

<Cyrtomenus ciliatus Cyrtomenus ciliatus Cyrtomenus ciliatus

What are they?

A group of rather unusual bugs, some of which could easily be mistaken for beetles. These insects typically spend much of their time below ground where they feed on plant roots. However, they do surface from time to time and can sometimes be found coming to lights at night. They are most closely related to the Pentatomid bugs (stink bugs and allies).

Identification

A drab group of mostly dark insects which rather resemble beetles. Look for the stout, well-spined digging forelegs and the membranous distal half to the wings.

     Cyrtomenus ciliatus
